So Ben Burtt gave the most awesome presentation I've had the opportunity to see at any time here at Uni... probably ever, actually. What a fucking genius. Friendly guy too, nobody was really taking photos so I abstained as well, but it was awesome getting to meet him in person and exchange a few words about the business and such.

That's awesome.

Yeah, that is awesome. How was the presentation structured? What was it about, specifically?

Second behind Billy Dee Williams?

I'd say third to Nien Numb.

I'm in the middle of watching The Boys from Brazil, which could have one of the most random awesome casts ever assembled:

James Mason, Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier, Steve Guttenberg, the other guy who gets his place blown off at the end of Raiders, Alfred from the first four Batman movies, Mr. Slugworth from Willy Wonka... and almost all of them are Nazis. Fucking rad.

Peef Dawg Sr.'s favorite flick.

2.5 hour presentation. First half was a sort of lecture where he discussed his history in the industry, how he got started working in sound for Lucas and what not. Also talked about the films that inspire his particular methodology and some very insightful idea on creative sound design in general. His audio-visual presentation was outrageously awesome. Great complement of still images, text support, short behind the scenes clips from work he's done, and two really fantastic video montages he threw together himself highlighting some of his favorite sound moments from film history. It's refreshing seeing something from an absolute professional filmmaker and editor in this setting. Great stuff.

The second half was a great Q&A, which spawned a lot of interesting discussion back and forth with us in the audience. He also broke down into a very brief Lucas impersonation at one point... which was enjoyable.

Time to rank the 5 movies I've seen in the theatre this year:

1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

I never brought it up, but I wound up seeing this a couple weeks ago finally. It was really solid, but I don't know if it's the best of the series. And I feel like the entire cave sequence could have been better. I imagined that completely differently. Probably just the age-old case of the book being better than the movie. Broadbent is always awesome and was a terrific choice for Slughorn.

Deathly Hallows is going to kick some serious ass.

Picked up a handful of films at the thrift store today, all $2 each:

Capricorn One (sci-fi with O.J. FUCKING Simpson)
Ozma of Oz (animated feature)
Reprise (indie film from last year that I regretted not catching in the theatre)
The Entertainer (late Olivier tour-de-force)
Dana Carvey Comedy Special (2-disc set which also includes his first HBO special)
Our Town (basically a filmed theatrical production, put it was Paul Newman's first Broadway appearance in 38 years)

All for $12.

Yeah, it is. I have a soft spot for the guy. Even Master of Disguise, which was an awful, awful film, made me laugh a lot.

TURTLE TURTLE.

Am I not turtley enough for the turtle club?

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of the guy. His Al Gore impression in the special is incredible. Actually, the entire bit about the Reagan Oracle is gold.

I don't know. I know Danny Boyle recently said he declined the offer. Which I'd say is a good thing. Some fans are suggesting Matthew Vaughn, which could be interesting.

You know who I'd like to see direct a Bond film... because I'm insane, but that's OK because it will never happen?

Kevin Costner.

Wow, I would've loved to have witnessed that.

"Uhh... you get to see him as a little kid!"

Awful movie, but his Quint impression in the boat fucking killed me.

Who gives a fuck about Kevin Costner?

Whatever casting agent who tried to get Harrison Ford, and failed.

Kevin Costner does. Also he's made good movies. So there's that.

He's sailed farther than most have dreamed! And drank his own urine.

Saw Drag Me to Hell again tonight at the student theater, such a fucking fun time, especially since it was Lance's favorite film so far this year.

We'll have to remember this the next time Lance trashes the prequels.

Bookmark it up.

Hell, I think I've come to terms with my feelings on the prequels... and I'm a better person for it.

Well since you said "movies", as in plural, then you must be praising Dances With Wolves.

Which might open you up to even more ridicule.

But seriously, you say this like an offhand comment made during a Bond conversation opened up some great window to a deep-seeded admiration for Costner as a director. Which is silly. But please do bring this up some time in the future. I always enjoy it when you make yourself look foolish.
