Hi everyone, i am a lifelong U2 fan and a longtime reader on this board but felt compelled on Saturday to join after being blown away, absolutely amazed by how good this album is. Just as a quick introduction, I am 31 years old and unlike many around my age, classic rock is by far my favorite music. My dad made sure to get me listening to U2, Tom Petty, Guns n Roses etc as a toddler and I’ve just always loved the rock sound. My parents 2nd date was to a Queen concert so naturally this type of music was always around growing up. My favorite band has always been U2, the sound is so unique and i’m amazed that just 4 guys can create that much sound. Anyways the releases from the past 20 years have been good and there are always songs i’ve enjoyed (magnificent, iris etc) but i just wasn’t sure they had another top to bottom classic in them. They did. This album is true art and I’ve been listening and raving about it to anyone who will listen since Friday. Such a diverse set of songs, seriously does anyone else hear a zombies or ten years after vibe on summer of Love? And every member is at the top of their game. I’m a big James Bond movie fan and this album reminds me of watching Casino Royale in 2006. All these years later, a legitimate classic can still be made. It’s the real thing for sure, perhaps even better than the real thing

Welcome, glad you like the album so much. What would you say are your favorite songs?
Listened to the album whilst driving home last night, few thoughts on this one- it does seem more stripped back than SOI, the standout track is Summer of Love and the first half of the album (up to Red Flag Day) is stronger than the back end of the album
I don't like The Showman ( I skipped it last night), and the ballads at the end of the album are bit too Coldplay- like for comfort
Overall I like it ( I prefer SOI) it's a bit bland in places and recycling the turgid Song for Someone is something I wish they hadn't done

Since this is the holdout thread, I’m actually still a holdout. I promised myself first time I’d listen to the album proper is on cd quality or better. My ticket redemption cds still haven’t arrived & we don’t have the extra cash to be buying duplicates. Hoping for Dec5 delivery like the shipping estimate said.

Thanks everyone for the welcomes. @cosmokramer i genuinely enjoy every song aside from the Kygo remix but a handful of tracks really stand out: Lights of Home- Larry’s drumming really pushes this one, love the fill during free yourself bit and also the back to back cymbal and kick drum accents during the final “hey now” chorus. (I play drums so that stuff is cool) Summer of Love-Love the 60’s vibe and sinister bass line. Bono’s voice sounds amazing here and Edge’s playing is a standout Red Flag Day-well War is my favorite U2 album and this could’ve fit right in. This sounds like “two hearts beat as one” merged with some Chili Peppers guitar, awesome! Showman-fun track and love the “showman gives you front row to his heart” double tracked vocals. Immediately pictured Lennon and McCartney singing the part Little Things-Best Song on the album. It builds into this inspirational powerful last 1:45 that is U2 at its best Book of Your Heart-U2 doing a song with a Spanish Tango beat? Brilliant Those are my standouts but everything is really good. You can guess who my favorite member is from my username and this is album is some of his finest work. Everyone is in top form though. Saw U2 on the 7/31/15 msg show and it was a top 5 night of my whole life and am going to the Boston show and cannot wait to hear this new material live

The following is my FIRST impression which is likely to change (for better or worse) slightly:

Love is all we have left: 5
This song has a very "passengers" feel to it and I personally hated Passengers. But it also mixes in a bit of millennial U2 style that brings it up a little for me. Not much to sink your teeth into and this might drop into "dislike" territory.
Lights of Home: 6
There was nothing really memorable about this the first listen for me. I like to call these types of songs the "Last Night On Earth" tracks. Songs that I feel I should like but Im not really into. Its not bad but not....memorable. However, this was the very first listen and I have the urge to go back to it, which is a good thing.
You're The Best Thing about Me: 7.5
I like this song. Its fun and has a lot going on in the background. I have lived with it for 3 months now and tonight when I listened to it....I still liked it. My first impression was a 6 but it grew.
Get Out of Your Own Way: 8
Bono's vocal delivery is really good. The lyrics are solid (Lincoln is dodgy but I let it pass given its the only suspect moment). I love the chorus and the backing harmonies.
American Soul: 6
A lot of hate thrown at this song but its got a really cool groove. The lyrics can be suspect at times (yes, refu-jesus is either brilliant or fucking horrible and I won't argue with anyone who takes either side). Great drums...great! I don't hate it, I don't love it....its not a skip song and it plays best back to back with Get Out due to Kendrik.
Summer of Love: 8
Yeah...cool tune. Nice chorus and some really cool sounds going on here and I wanted more! I can see this rising in ranking for me...fun song!
Red Flag Day: 7
Some really cool bass and harmonies going on here. Cool lyrics too. I can see this song going up to an 8 or higher. I think the hype behind this song from both fans and reviewers (i.e. the War call backs) raised the bar and it impacted my unbiased listening. In fact, I am currently listening to it for the 2nd time right now and as I type this and its an 8 at least....but the rating of 7 sticks because this is about first impressions.
The Showman: 5
I really didn't find anything memorable about this. I definitely got the "Beach Boys" vibe but I also got a Wild Honey vibe and thats not good. Its not a dude but it wasn't memorable. I will say it had a very 80s vibe and they(Bono) sounded very youthful. I will be playing this more...so thats a good sign(I see this song going higher for me).
The Little Things That Give Me Away: 9.5
Well fuck me if this isn't an incredible song. The live version I felt was a 6(which isn't bad for me but isn't good). This version(plus 3/4 bottle of sake) made me tear up a little. As someone with two young children, I related to the "I wake at 4 in the morning" line and the worrying about my health and my kids. Oh, and its a fucking kick ass song with the classic U2 build up. Might go to a 10 for me.
Landlady: 8
I like this tune.I can't believe I didn't read one review from any of you about this song sounding like North and South of the River towards the ending. The lyrics are really beautiful, especially when I know they are about his wife.
Love is Bigger Than Anything in its Way: 9
Is "Love" the answer to everything? Is "Love" really bigger than anything? Well, I don't believe it is but I want to believe it is....I really do and this song gives me hope. The bird chirps at the very end are so subtle but perfect btw.
Axver....I read you wrote that that line is bad(I'm paraphrasing) because its not true. I get what you are writing and I agree with you. In fact, the old Cosmo would have not even thought twice about that lyric and thought it was ridiculous...but current Cosmo has two young children and this song hit me hard. I see the love and innocence in them and through them I get this song....I wish...no.... I want to truly believe its true that love will prevail over everything else.
13 (There is a Light): 8
Bono sings in a manner similar to Cedars of Lebanon and I really dislike that song (might be my least liked song of millennial U2) yet the lyrics and the sonics around this song click with me. The chorus is stolen right from Song for Someone. Fortunately, I really liked that song (1 of 2 songs that I really liked). Good tune but I don't see this going higher and only can see it going lower.
Extras:
Ordinary Love (new mix): 7
I don't like Ordinary Love but there are some cool things going on in this song and I didn't have the urge to skip it.
Book of Your Heart: 5
I was expecting this epic song but it was largely forgettable(first listen mind you). I think this is another victim of the "hype" of pre-release reviews. I also heard that "Cedars" style singing, which I don't like.
Lights of Home (Strings): 7
It had a lot going on and the lyrics of this version had the benefit of a 2nd listen (cheater) but I did like the strings a lot (I also thought the Strings version of Please was a lot better than the album cut). At first listen, this version is better than the album proper version.
You're the Best Thing Kygo: Blah....I didn't even listen to it because its just not interesting to me. I give it a 5.

With my first week with the album coming to a close soon and having listened to it several times, I will likely provide a proper review soon. Some of the above ratings have changed, some went down and some went up. I also will soon be able to compare it to SOI to some extent. Although, SOI had some serious staying power with me as I enjoyed listening to that album.

I’m no longer a holdout- SOE CD’s finally came in the mail today, redeemed on Nov 16. TM emailed me Nov 30 that they shipped. Just to give any others a timeframe they might be able to expect to get theirs. Wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be to wait. I’m glad I didn’t listen to subpar audio versions. So far Showman, Blackout, Red Flag Day are my top standout songs and surprised how much I like American Soul. SNL’s chronic audio problems gave me a bad impression, plus Bono needs to drop the megaphone

Pretty much, haha! Yeah, the singles from there got my attention, on top of a few songs I already knew by then, so it pretty much took off from there once I purchased that album. Most of my friends were into either, say, rap or Nickelback. So I didn't mind standing out too much in that respect!
But yeah, I bought All That You Can't Leave Behind in early 2001 and by the end of the year, I had most of their albums. Pretty much in hook, line and sinker after that!

Just got the CD today and I must say it sounds even better then the ITunes version to my ear. What I like about this album is that the songs are given room to breathe and aren't overproduced and overcooked as some tracks have been on recent U2 records. Even though U2 had so many different producers this still sounds like a very cohesive album. Very impressed with the boys continued passion to make music well beyond their contemporaries.

CosmoKramer, This is not an easy one-line answer and since I read your question I’ve been wanting to respond while not giving a knee jerk reaction. So I needed to listen to it a few more times several different ways to give myself a good impression and understanding of the album. Listened to it on cd, in our kitchen with family around playing in the background during dinner, during my work commute both to and from work, in my own privacy laying in bed with a good set of headphones on. I listened to it all of these ways before I felt I could answer this. Really because I needed to take the songs with me and see what they evoke, remind me of, really get lost in them. I know I laughed after typing that cus how many times Bono says they got lost in the music.
And it wasn’t until I just heard the final lyrics of 13 (there is a light) that I could give a good answer to your question. Bono says ‘This is a song for someone like me’ and that lyric underlined the entire album for me. Not to say that Bono’s thoughts define an album but his presence is so strong that it tends to overtake what Larry & Adam and even The Edge contribute. I think all of the good and bad and everything he’s seen and experienced on a personal level and worldly level inspired him to be a voice of advice and how to hold it all together so you don’t lose hope, faith and yourself.
He said a few times on this promo tour and I’m paraphrasing that a lot of the times you think you’re writing something for someone else and it ends up it’s what you yourself need to hear so I think we are getting a really strong idea of Bono’s inner motor, his foundation, especially after whatever significance this health scare had. I had a significant one myself a few years ago and it changes you, made me more expressive and grateful but also more opinionated and confident. Also able to laugh a little differently and accept some lighter things in between all of the serious. I’m hearing all of those ranges from Bono more on this album.
This album is extremely personal, maybe more than any other they’ve made to date. And as deep and emotional as some of the songs get like The Little Things, there’s a lot of emotional range including lighthearted moments that to me keep this album from getting too heavy. But it’s a U2 album, it’s gonna have weight as it should. As Eddie Vedder once said you have to have a little fiber in your diet.
Sonically, I’m hearing a lot of variety from the band and it seems like a great deviation from SOI, which is jarring not in a bad way, but there were so many great songs on SOI like Raised by Wolves & Cedarwood Road that had teeth, Give me an entire album of RBW & CR and I’m a happy rock fan! That I do miss on SOE but The Blackout gives us those teeeth thank God. Even American Soul has some kick to it. I thought I was going to hate the song based on what I was reading and even the terrible SNL audio from their performance.
I’m hearing some odes to music that maybe inspired them- Red Flag Day & The Showman remind me of some of The Police & lighter Led Zeppelin songs like D’yer Maker and Fool I’m the Rain. Honestly it’s a side of the band we haven’t gotten in some time. The Showman to me stands well right next to Party Girl and I see it being a great B-stage song.
I think we could get some potentially great pairings in concert and I think when you can get new songs next to warhorses that’s the sign of a long lasting album. But not always- where the hell has ‘Please’ been since Popmart????? GOOYOW I think would make a great show opener. The Little Things feels like it could have the next epic transition into Streets & out of nowhere when listening to the opening track ‘Love is all we have left’ it reminded me sonically & lyrically of the intro to The Fly used from the Elevation 2001 Tour. I’d totally take this ambient number live to transition into The Fly.
So ultimately after about 5 or so listens SOE is making sense to me as a collective whole. I wasn’t expecting this but the first time I really intently listened to ‘Love is bigger than anything in its way’ I teared up and that release was the icing on the cake and what sold me on the album being not just average. I’m with the crowd of people saying there isn’t a wasted song on the album. Nothing feels like a throwaway to me. I’d put it right now in the top 1/3 of their catalog for me personally. Lots of great hooks & ear worms.
Now if they could just do a straight up harder rock album. That’d be the dream!

First I want to thank Womanfish for uploading the album for download last Friday. I had to wait till Monday for the CD to be delivered from Amazon. Below are thoughts from SOE and I have listened to it a few times already.
Love Is All We Have Left: A very different song to open an album; this feels like something from Passengers. Doesn’t do much for me but maybe in time it will grow. Mind you, the lyric “and love….love is all we have left” I keep hearing in my head.
Lights Of Home: This proceeded well from the opening track. This has a nice flow to it and can defiantly see the crowd singing the chorus to this one. The slide guitar is classic Edge. Got some different drumming going on too from Larry; two sets of drums over lapping near end of song. A good track and one that could be a single.
You’re The Best Thing About Me: Still liking this song and love that Edge chime.
Get Out Of Your Own Way: A catchy tune and has that Beautiful Day vibe to it. I can see why it was released as a single.
American Soul: This song I think I would like more if I hadn’t heard elements of it already (Glastonbury and Volcano). I really wished they released Glastonbury as it was. Back to American Soul, it just bugs me that they used other bits from songs; it’s a personal thing I guess.

The Showman (Little More Better): This song reminds me of something from the ATYCLB/HTDAAB era; like a B-side. This one isn’t doing much for me, at this time.
The Little Things That Give You Away: This is a good song, and starts slow but it builds and builds. Love the guitar on this one; reminds me of City Of Blinding Lights. Just before the 4 minutes mark, love how the band come together and just go off. We have heard this a few times live, but the studio version I found to be slightly better. When they go on tour again, this will be a highlight. This is one of my favorites from this album. My wife heard it for the first time and she was like wow this is really good. She is a U2 fan, but not as big as I am.
Landlady: What I like about this one is the guitar medley along with the atmospheric music playing in the background. Reminds me of something from UF. You can hear the passion of Bono in this, as this is about Ali supporting him in the early days of U2. Liking it more and more with each listen.
The Blackout: The heavy side of U2 is out on this one and it’s been missed. I want to hear more of this U2 in the future. Could be that my favorite album is Achtung Baby. Great to hear the Adam and Larry stand out on this one. Edge and the guitar and distortion going on. This should have been released as a single and this will be great live!

I can't stop listening to this album... I do skip over track 1 most of the time and don't really pay attention to track 13... again I've said in other post the album is tracks 2 to 12 for me. 11 songs.

SOE --- I feel alive!
I have that feeling again with SOE. Songs speak to me. I see the things I'm dealing with now and the songs are speaking to me. So say last album Every Breaking Wave is a beautfiul song, I love hearing all 3334 versions of it -- but the lyrics don't move me in the way Miracle Drug does.
With this new album, so many of the lyrics and songs hit my core. And feel they're speaking to me. I haven't felt this close to U2 since 2004 music wise... again the last I&E tour itself was stellar...
But Cedarwood Road -- awesome live. Raised by Wolves awesome live... but they don't speak to me the way Walk On did...
You get it. You know it.

I have that feeling again with SOE. Songs speak to me. I see the things I'm dealing with now and the songs are speaking to me. So say last album Every Breaking Wave is a beautfiul song, I love hearing all 3334 versions of it -- but the lyrics don't move me in the way Miracle Drug does.
With this new album, so many of the lyrics and songs hit my core. And feel they're speaking to me. I haven't felt this close to U2 since 2004 music wise... again the last I&E tour itself was stellar...
But Cedarwood Road -- awesome live. Raised by Wolves awesome live... but they don't speak to me the way Walk On did...
You get it. You know it.

I’m with ya, 3 erections up & if they Up their game on the tour and take the songs to the next level ala The Blackout they just might get the all important 4th erection.
Think of it this way, Pop is a beloved album but it got better after we heard the live versions of Mofo, LNOE, Gone, Please. SOE can go the same way

Love it! Glad to see your review. I’ve held back from fully reviewing it because I’m still in the honeymoon phase with it but I am leaning towards the opinion that the band hit it out of the park with this one.
There’s been a lot of criticism surrounding the choose of singles, but I understand their choices and like the songs. As great as Little Things and Lights Of Home are, I can’t see them getting any radio play. I at least hear The Best Thing on my local station in Green Bay, which is saying a lot. And I have no problem with them releasing the accessible songs while there are better album tracks. Makes the album stronger.

I agree with what you're saying. SOI coming out unexpectedly took away from the experience; in some ways, when I think back on it, it doesn't feel like a real U2 album in my mind. I like it, but the release wasn't like the exciting times waiting for HTDAAB to come out. With SOE, I feel like I did in high school with HTDAAB; great memories were made that day. With SOI... no memories.

There are still a couple of tracks that I am not fully settled on just yet to rate.
Best Thing is a funny one. Very first listen I gave it a 6. Then after a few listens it went up to a 7 and then an 8. Before the album came out, it settled at a 7.5 for me (just shy Of my “coveted” 8 rating mark that I reserve for songs that I consider good and will be listened to for years to come). When the album came out I skipped over it along with Get Out and AS because I wanted the newer stuff. Now I find I go back to it when listening to the album and don’t skip it. I like this song....it might move up a bit for me.
