I live on U2 forums. TalkU2, interference mostly.
Just wondering how many people here are also @U2 members? They announced recently that their forum was shutting down, so I guess I will be coming here more often. It was a smaller fansite, but it was clearly the fansite preferred by the band (edge and Adam even showed up to an @U2 party in New York once)

Just wondering how interference members feel about @U2? Heard of it? A Member? Care that they shut down their forum? Thoughts?

I am an @u2 forum member. I liked that board quite bit, and I'm sad to see it shut down.

I feel bad for people who were members of the community. I became a regular here after a previous forum (not U2-related) was shut down in 2003 or early 2004 and that was gutting, I'd loved the place. You don't want to lose somewhere you visit regularly and where you have friends.

But atu2's forum wasn't much chop. So heavily moderated that they censor their own first rule, "don't be a d**k". Who even thinks "dick" is a swear word, especially in that context? I prefer the lighter touch on Interference that encourages a more lively discussion - and some good back-and-forth at times. I found the atu2 forum too serious, too god-y, too sensitive, too toe-the-line. I mean, come on, they're shutting the place down in part because some poster disliked The Best Thing in a colourful way. That person was clearly the worst thing that ever happened a forum, and I'd like to shake their hand.

And of course members of U2 have only shown up at an atu2 party, because there hasn't been an Interference one for them to attend!

I used to go to the atU2 forums, but then they started being way more negative than Interference, attacking everything U2 did or the fans Bono got on stage during U2ie tour, i think it was that last part that bothered me the most, so I stopped visiting. But they did give us Fisher

Besides I don't have time for two forums

wow, that's pretty crazy. But the forum is pretty much a ghost town over there. Also, like I have said a lot in the past, it seemed to be over run by older fans that would literally shit on everything new that U2 did. Not really a fun forum experience. Much more variety here. As you can see, I've hung around here for a while. lol

Oh, way back in 2000 I joined both @U2 and Interference. For a while, I posted at @U2 under various aliases but it was always fun. Then, these evil Ted Nugent Pro Gun trolls attacked the forum and bombarded it with...scat porn. I shit you not. (Sorry, couldn't resist ) As a result, the forum did close. Not sure when it returned, but it was The Blue Crack forever after that.

@U2 forum member and ex staffer for Atu2. Matt McGee (the Founder )is a hardcore Christianity nut, so he is the mastermind behind the ridiculous policing of the site and incessant micromanaging. Everything to him is a 'sin'. (Nothing wrong with God. Im a Catholic, but he is an extreme case. You know the type).

Now I write articles for this site. Its not perfect, but some good people are here and very funny. And if you can take it when the joke is on you (Happened over the summer) everyone has a good time.

I wouldn't say it's really a ghost town over there. Maybe not as many posters as there are here, but that's a given for any of the other U2 forums, I thought?

I've been here much longer, but I do pop over there and see what's going (especially during tour time, when I tend to post there a bit more). There are some decent people on that forum, but the drama does seem to have picked up a notch in more recent times. Not sure why, but apparently enough so that the moderators there are pretty much tired of it. Guess we'll see if this is a permanent thing or not.

The odd thing is that there are a few people over there who remarked that Interference was a bit on the negative side ("crap" and "toxic cesspool" were a few terms thrown out there). Guess those opinions just depend on who you ask?!

This place is a toxic cesspool, but it's OUR toxic cesspool

I think a lot of things said about Interference are exaggerated, but a few bad experiences can certainly turn someone off.

I saw a reference to the "Please don't say 'cunt' / omg who cares if I say 'cunt' get over it" thread, and honestly, that would have turned me off as well if I'd popped over here to see what was going on.

This place can certainly be hard to get into as a newbie. I urge everyone to be nice to new posters and just, you know, follow the golden rule of Don't Be an Asshole.

Yeah, their tone is too serious for me. I'll probably unsubscribe from their mailing list too - I like getting the news, but between their emails, this place, Facebook and Twitter (mostly Twitter), I see it umpteen million times.

Here's the difference between @U2 and Interference on a "negativity" stand point.

@U2 Forum is more negative toward the band, and new material.

Interference can get into some pretty nasty drag out fights that can get a little more personal sometimes, but usually are directed at other members, offensive posts, trolling, etc...

To me Interference is miles better. After being here for so long, it does get a bit like family, and you know the personalities of the other people here. Which i think helps me to see it more positively since i would only pop over to @U2 once in a great while.

So ... you like the personal jabs and trolling???

;)

I’ve tried every U2 forum the past 13 yrs and here the fans are just way more sophisticated and knowledgeable. The personalities here shine through, good and bad; but the U2 fandom is deep and very analytical.

Yes, to your comments in paragraph 2 above. (Sorry, I'm not going to repeat that word). That really turned me off, because the person who posted that word was called out on it and then proceeded to announce that he was going to repeat that word because it doesn't have a bad meaning in Ireland or wherever he was from, and then he did just that--over and over and over. I can handle a lot of language but, being a woman, I draw the line at that word. It was unnecessary.

The only two forums I belong to are this one and @u2. I have to admit I dislike the formatting of this forum--a lot. I think it's hard to navigate/find what you're looking for, but I keep coming back. @u2 has a much cleaner/easier format, and I will miss it for that reason alone.

I'll often pipe up in a lot of situations here where people are being unnecessarily rude or mean, but that was one where I just decided to NOPE on outta there.

Quite funny that one of the posts causing the place to shut down was someone comparing TBT to a dog being castrated. Which is actually a pretty apt comparison.

That said, I used to post there somewhat regularly but haven't since September 2014. The place definitely had a different tone than Interference, and isn't quite as fun or zany as this place, but there were a lot of knowledgable people there and a few insiders. To their credit a lot of them figured out pretty early that Achtung Baby wouldn't be remastered.

Annnyway, @U2 wasn't any better or worse than Interference, just different. They have knowledgeable posters, ignorant posters, nice people, jerks, trolls & troll hunters, just like we do. And their share of pie fights, just like we have.

I for one welcome all their members to come fish in our pond here. The more the merrier!

I get annoyed when it's just a bunch of hyperbolic negative statements, and it gets old real fast, but whatever.

But a dog being castrated? As in, a dog starts singing catchy, innocuous pop songs while their balls are being cut off? I'd like to meet that dog, actually.
