$300 for Upper Deck - What Are They Smoking?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

This is quite possibly the dumbest thing you've ever written here. I'm sorry, not only are they nowhere NEAR as big as Bryan Adams and a Rush...seriously? Bryan Adams??? Lmao....they massively suck balls. Just abhorrent crap, mostly outside of one or two songs we've had shoved down our throats to the point of being sick. I cringe every time someone refers to them as somehow representative of Canadian rock.

Jesus fucking Christ, do you not understand the use of descriptors to clarify things for people who are unfamiliar with something? Is it that difficult to understand that "Canada's U2" isn't fucking LITERAL, it's meant to explain that the Hip are a massively popular band. Maybe you can't see that because your personal taste prevents you from evaluating a fact, but they are massive. Get back to reality when you're done crying over the lack of Ford More Years.

Anyway, I think that the Hip probably are just as popular as Rush in Canada. I got my ticket to see Rush a couple of weeks before the show and got moved from the 300s to the fist level because it was only half sold. It was the second of two shows. Rush are one of my favorite bands, but you're overstating their popularity.

As exhibited by what? Their dozens of fans? Rush still fills amphitheatres and arenas. The hip is a marginal theatre act.

A marginal theatre act? They play arenas in Canada. Hence the description of Canada's U2 that GVOx can't understand.

I'm doing four shows and the average price I'm paying is £100 a ticket. I've got premium seats for two shows, GA for one and stratospherically high up balcony seats for another.

I offset the costs based on the fact that I cannot remember the last time I paid for an album (by any artist), a movie and many other 'digital' items that are freely available on torrent sites.

Over the last ten years I must have saved literally thousands of pounds. Granted, I end up listening to some music and watching some movies I'd never even have heard of, let alone paid for had it not been for torrent sites... but the stuff I've actually wanted and haven't had to pay for is a pretty hefty amount.

So, "the Lord giveth... and the Lord taketh away."

I'm not for one second trying to justify any pricing for U2 shows, just demonstrating how I can square it in my own mind and sleep at night!

I wonder why U2 can't do one show in each city that's 'free.' When I say 'free', I mean included in your U2.com sub. So, that show is specifically for fan club members. You get a code and apply for tickets. Your name goes into a draw for that show. The draw takes place and you get a ticket if you are drawn. Your allocation location at the show is random so if you get GA, great. If you don't, it's just luck of the draw. Ticket limit is two and all tickets are physical tickets with your name, address and U2.com membership number printed on them. You have to attend the show with two forms of id, both showing your name and address... like a utility bill or bank statement. As the whole show would be a U2.com show then everybody knows what to expect and what the drill will be. Also, because of the 'lottery' aspect of the ticket allocation you're never going to think that you could have got better tickets as it was all random and dictated by the draw. You may get lucky, you may not. There would still be general sale shows if you wanted to try again.

There would be no presale situation, no stress or anxiety. You just apply for the show and wait for your allocation.

Just a thought.

Ahahaha this failed diss again. It's incredible that this is your go-to when I've never even voted in a Toronto election...BECAUSE I CANT. Lol. Then again, I console myself by knowing that it comes from the guy who thinks the Hip are bigger than Bryan Adams.

And that proves what? That they get 10% of the population to go see them play? Nice job at cherry picking a stat to support your case.

What I'm doing there is calling you an idiot; you seem like the type who'd support that buffoon because you can't understand a basic analogy.

Yes, I think that the Hip are more popular than Bryan Adams over the last 20 years in Canada, it's not an absurd statement at all. He's sold 1.6 million studio albums in Canada since 91, the Hip have sold 3.3 million since 1992. They've each had a million seller, and Adams' most recent record didn't even go platinum whereas every Hip album has.

You may disagree if you want, that's your right as a person who lets their taste get in the way of verifiable facts.

Duly noted, you're in the habit of name calling when you lose.

Brian Adams is a certifiable international megastar, with 17 million sold...according to his agent 60 million worldwide. Rush I think is around 25 million now. The Hip? A fraction of either those two numbers. Talk about cherry picking your facts! :lmao:

And this guy calls people idiots

I keep editing my post cause I keep finding new Bryan Adams figures lol. Wiki says over 100 million albums, making him the best selling Canadian rock artist of all time

:lmao:

Is it that hard to understand that I'm talking about Canadian success (as you were), and that they were used as an example for ticket prices at the ACC?

Onto the ignore list you go.

That's a really good idea, it would be a very nice gesture on their part.

i dont think anything is gained by us crapping over each other. i think we have legitimate beefs with ticket prices etc. perhaps i just need to accept that now in my 40s, when i could EASILY drop 300 for tickets, and was willing to and am still willing to for RZ tickets, i might just be getting over U2....perhaps that is why my nose is more bent out of shape....kind of like when i used to fancy a nice bottle of claret...now, i am more of a craft beer person with a side of some yamazaki 12 year...i love that we can bitch at each other without getting banned though...something i love about this site. and i did vote for tory to get rid of the person who admitted smoking crack.

You said the Hip were Canada's U2. It's a flat out false equivalency.

U2 is Ireland's #1 top selling rock artist of all time.

Bryan Adams is Canada's #1 top selling rock artist of all time. Somewhere not too far below him, falls Rush.

And way on down the list, you'll find The Tragically Hip.

Therefore, of any artist, Bryan Adams is the equivalent of the sort of stature and impact that U2 has had for Ireland, for Canada.

Well, Celine Dion has sold 200 million records worldwide, by far making her the biggest selling Canadian artist of all time. Actually one of the biggest selling artists of all time, period, even more than our favourite Irish quartet.

Wouldn't that make her the Canadian U2?

Just sayin'.

Either way, Rush blows The Tragically Hip out of the water in every measurable way possible. And I had no idea Bryan Adams was that popular.

i think that is right. although i would never go to a concert of hers. :D well, i probably would if it was free for me...

Celine Dion is not a rock artist.

.....

I think Celine is pretty awesome, actually.

i'll give her that. but she is like country music to me. just...normally, i'll love all sorts of stuff but country and dressing up at concerts like a fucking ball, just can not get there...even when the tickets are free.

BTW, another said to check out the prices for JT's 20:20...floor, which for anyone interested they dropped floors for tonight at the very last row, are 200 each, seated, and rafters side, about the same and rafters rear, 100....get them if you want to go to see JT....
