I just feel like recounting my Frosh week because...well, I'm bored and I feel like it. This post is going to be ridiculously long. If you get easily offended by tales of underage drinking and debauchery, then look away.
So it starts Sunday, September 5th. Registration is 9 am-12 pm, but me being the lazy ass, I decide to show up at noon. I get there (at about 12:10, no less), and get thrown into a group called the Transformers. We all get frosh names, and they're all names of specific Transformers. I wanted Optimus Prime, but they didn't have it, so they gave me X-Brawn. My leaders were Jazz and Red Alert, but Red Alert's real name was Sibi, which was a lot easier to remember, so we all just called him that. We all went over to the quad and had a big free barbeque. I quickly made friends with 3 guys in my group, Tristan (Hot Rod), Andrew (Road Rage), and Dylan (Inferno). So after this BBQ is over we have an Amazing Race-type thing all over campus to learn where everything is. This takes place till about 7-ish before we stroll over to the sports complex (Dalplex) for opening ceremonies. There were videos and then finally a cheer-off, first between off-campus (me) and on-campus. We thoroughly thrashed on-campus (I think we had 129 decibels). Then we took off for a supper break before coming back for something called the Super SUB. This was a giant party in the Student Union Building. On the upper floor was a dance, and the lower floor was massive inflatable boxing and sumo wrestling. After getting my ass kicked at inflatable boxing, me and the three guys strolled up to the dance, picked a spot, and started dancing. We were not having much fun, and were about to leave before a girl comes dashing out of a pack and runs up to Andrew and asks him if they can join us. So all of a sudden there's 4 of us guys and about 12 girls. The idiotic friends of mine keep boxing out the girls by going into the middle of the circle to make a mini-circle inside the circle. I stay on the outside with the ladies and it pays off. I meet a girl named Pascale, who lives in the all-girls residence (Shirreff). She's taking Music and is from northern New Brunswick. Her and I talk for a good 2 hours and I take a bit of a shining to her, but nothing major. The one thing I forgot was to get her phone number or e-mail address so I could contact her later. The girls leave at about 11:00 and so do we, because without the girls we just look like 4 doofuses standing there dancing by ourselves. The other guys hop a bus for home and I do too. I end up at my dad's house and have a couple beers then call it a night.
Monday arrives and we have to be there for 10. I get there just on time thanks to the buses, and we have what's called Wild On Halifax. It's a big scavenger hunt across the city, except instead of getting items, we need to use the clues to find specific spots and then get our pictures taken there to prove we were there. Our group does reasonably well (we didn't win though) before having to go back to the campus for the next event, which was to meet up for a Beach party at a private beach. It didn't terribly appeal to me (I'm not much of a beach guy), but I went anyways, thinking that I could maybe find Pascale and talk to her some more. I played a little frisbee, looked for her, couldn't find her, then went home halfway through for dinner. I came back at 7:30 for a Mocktail Night in the campus bar, but the mocktails were $3.50 each and I sure as hell wasn't paying almost 4 bucks I didn't even really have for a fake cocktail. I left about a half hour into it because I was bored, and decided I needed sleep anyways.
Tuesday is the day of Shinerama. All the groups were separate all over the city and so there was no chance of me seeing Pascale today. At this point I basically had resigned myself to letting her go, thinking "I'll see her at some point this year and say hi". For Shinerama we basically blitzed the city, raising money for Cystic Fibrosis research. I played guitar, people stopped traffic, shined shoes, solicited outside grocery stores...basically whatever we could do to get people to give us money. We ended up raising as a school over $65,000 in the one day. We were out there from about 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. We then had a break of about three hours in which to eat and just hang out in general. At 7 pm there was a show by a comedian and an x-rated hypnotist. The show started about an hour late. I went to the washroom at one point and walked in on a girl giving a guy a blowjob in the stall. That was fun. Anyways, back at my seat, while waiting for the show to start, I kept scanning the crowd, looking for Pascale. No sight of her anywhere so I basically said "screw it, no sense wasting my time on her anymore". I had resigned myself to fate. The show began, it was absolutely hilarious. A (female) friend of mine was hypnotized and ended up humping me, so that was a good time. Anyways, that ended and Dylan mentions in passing that he heard there was a kegger in one of the residences. Well a kegger sounds like a good time, so I make the necessary arrangements (read: lies) to my parents, and we decide to go on a hunt for keggers. We sneak into the residence (Fountain Hall), stroll around and can't find any keg party anywhere. We figure we won't find it so we leave to find some other way of obtaining liquor. We're standing outside a window to one of the residences when we hear a "hi" coming from inside. Turns out it's a gathering in there, there are about 5 girls in there and we've been invited in, except we still have no alcohol. Dylan and Andrew are chatting away through the window when I hear two guys that are walking past mention "let's hit up this kegger". Naturally, I stop them and ask them where the kegger is at. They tell us "oh, you're in the wrong spot, it's on Seymour street, you can't miss it". Seymour St is only 2 blocks away so we decide to hit it up. We get there, pay our 10 bucks for a glass and each have about 4 or 5 beer. This is at about 10:30. We're there until we see flashlights scanning the crowd at about 11:00 and hear someone mention "oh the cops are here". Well the four of us are all underage, so we hop a fence (by now pretty buzzed from drinking so much beer in such a short time, cause we knew the thing was going to be busted up soon). So we run for a while, cut through a couple of backyards, dodge some cops, and end up right outside Fountain Hall again. The girls invite us back inside so we make our way in and stand around this room, make the necessary introductions, and then I decide I must go on a hunt for alcohol. I had 10 dollars in my pocket and I was determined to get some more liquor. So I troll the first floor and nobody has anything they're willing to sell. Second floor, nothing as well. I get to the third floor and randomly walk into some party and ask a guy if he's got anything he'd like to sell, and he says yes. So we stroll back to his room, and he's got a jug of tequila. I grab an empty beer bottle (the only thing really to keep it in), he fills it up, and I give him my 10. Go back downstairs and everyone's still chatting away. I'm flat broke now, because that was my last cash I used to buy the tequila, so I have no mix. I have to drink a pint of tequila straight with no chaser out of an old beer bottle. But by this time I'm too buzzed to care so I start givin' 'er, slowly but surely. I start chatting up a girl named Julia who happens to be the daughter of my Grade 7 homeroom teacher. I talk to her for a good 2 or 3 hours, and by 2:30 am it's time for her to go home back to Shirreff (it's the all-girls residence, by the way, and on the opposite end of campus from Fountain). So I'm taking a drunken shining to Julia now, and that's alright by me. So I escort her back to home, and she offers me a place to sleep, because the buses stop running at about midnight and I can't afford a cab. Otherwise I'll have to walk to my dad's house, which is a very long distance. I'd say it's a good 15-20 kilometres, and it's about 5-10 degrees Celcius out (about 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit). But alas, because it's the all-girls dorm and it's 2:30 in the morning, there is a security guard posted at the front entrance to prevent boys from getting in after midnight. So I have to take the long walk home. I'm pretty ripped by this point and I still have half the tequila left, so I decide to use the tequila to keep me warm. The walk starts and I start to sing. I sang all of Dark Side of the Moon a couple of times, even sang the Vertigo leak as best as I could and pretty damn loud too. I probably woke up some people along the way. Passed some cops, who didn't bother to do anything to me even though I was stumbling everywhere, was cold and had open liquor in my hand on a public sidewalk and was making all kinds of noise. Eventually I got home at 5 am after a 2.5 hour walk across the city and go straight to bed.
Wednesday arrives, and it's a day to sleep in. The only activities are just a big society fair all day until about 4:30 pm, when there is a concert on the quad featuring two local bands (The Contact and In-Flight Safety) as well as a big national band from right around here, The Trews. I showed up at about 3:00, met up with some folks and just hung around till the concert started. The Contact was pretty good for a local act. I really liked In-Flight Safety, they reminded me a lot of a Canadian band called Pilate. The Trews were the main event for me though. I ran right up to the front of the crowd and was jumping and screaming and singing along the whole time. I took a whack of pictures (which I will post as soon as I get some money for the developing of the film). After the show was over, I'm at the merchandise table looking for a Trews sweatshirt and who happens to come over but the boys themselves! Well I was nearly shitting myself by this time, but managed to go up to each of them and shake their hands and chat for a bit with them. I even got a picture of me with John-Angus and Jack. After the concert ends, I'm still slightly hung over from Tuesday so I decide to head home for some much-needed sleep, especially considering that the first day of class is Thursday and I have one at 10 am.
Thursday is the first day of classes. Class goes relatively well, and I end up making my morning class just in time. After that class, me and 2 other friends of mine are sitting on a concrete wall outside the library when I hear "hey Dave" from behind me. I turn around and there's Pascale, the girl I thought I'd never see again. I was so stunned at seeing her again all I could force out was a mumbled "hey" as she kept walking. I just stared as she walked further and further away. Suddenly my mind clicked in with a scream: "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING LETTING HER WALK AWAY!?!?!?" So I jump up, leaving my MP3 player, books, a drink, and schoolwork right on that wall, and take off in a full sprint after her (she was about 200 yards away by the time I came to my senses). I finally catch up after what seems like an eternity, and ask her for her MSN address. Then Ryan (a doofus friend of mine who was sitting on that wall with me) comes up behind and says Fawad (the other guy there) is sitting there on the wall waiting for us both to come back. Ryan tries to muscle in on me chatting with Pascale and she eventually tells us to come up to her room to add us directly to her MSN. So we head back into Shirreff again, she adds us up, we spend about a half hour in her room talking to her and a friend of hers who also happens to be there. Then me and Ryan leave and I'm satisfied that I now have a way to contact her. That evening more Frosh Week stuff goes on. It's casino night from 6 til 10 and then there's a "mystery band" afterwards. The rumour was that the band was Finger Eleven, since they were playing at SMU (another university in the city) the next night. Casino night went pretty good...I made my original $1000 (given out at the door, it was fake money) into over $2.5 million by winning an assload at blackjack and then putting it all on a 50-1 longshot in celebrity boxing, only to have the favorite trip over the mat and lose. Afterwards, the mystery band came out, and...well, instead of gushing about the story for the umptillionth time, I'll just post a link to the already typed story here: http://forum.interference.com/t95799.html . So after the show, I went home for the night, tired from the show and classes.
Friday rolls along now. Looks to be a pretty uneventful day though. I only have one class so I get to sleep in. That class ends at about 2:30 and I'm done for the day, so I decide to walk over to the computer lab to check up on Interference ( ) and to type up my notes from class. And lo and behold, Pascale is on MSN. That evening is Sex With Sue, so I ask her if she wants to meet up afterwards. The answer is yes and that she'll meet me at 7:00 in front of the SUB. Sex with Sue is absolutely hilarious, it was Sue Johanson, the famous sex educator, talking about sexual health and sexual issues. It ended at about 7 and I went and met up with Pascale, who was with a couple of her friends. We all were going to get some liquor, and then head back to Shirreff. The girls were nervous because there was Shirreff initiation that night and they wanted to avoid that, so since I'm the only one from around here, I had to lead the expedition to the liquor store in exchange for free booze. After a 15 minute walk each way, we get back to Shirreff, sneak in and have a good pre-drink before deciding to go up to another residence (Cameron) because we had heard that they were having a party there too. So we walk to Cameron, which is all the way across campus at about 9 pm, and some of the girls are already blitzed. We get to Cameron and get a free case of beer from the already drunk guys there and start to drink. By this time I'm really buzzed and I've been talking to Pascale all night. I feel pretty confident so my arm goes across the top of the couch, right behind her. So we stay there for God knows how long (probably till about 12:30), me and her just talking away. Then some of the girls hear of a party in yet another residence (Risley), so we all decide to go there, which is another 5 minutes or so walk away. We get there and it's stuffed full and hot and RA's are patrolling the halls like crazy so at about 1:30 am we all decide to head back to Cameron. We get back, get yet another free case of beer and hang out in another guy's room. I'm sitting on the bed next to Pascale, and all of a sudden, our hands brush up against each other and next thing I know her and I are holding hands, which is damn good by me. After a half hour or so there, we decide to go back to Shirreff, cause a lot of the girls want to go to bed. So me and Pascale walk back hand in hand (both pretty drunk, mind you). We get there and she's gotta go to bed (I can't sleep in Shirreff cause it's past time for boys to be allowed in, so once again I'm up shit creek with nowhere to sleep). So I give her a hug, and I was going to leave it at that, but then she comes out of nowhere and kisses me really softly and nicely. Then she looks me right in the eye (which melted me), said good night, and left for bed. At this point I'm on cloud nine, so I leave and walk back to Cameron to rejoin the party, but it turns out that it's now quiet hour, so I randomly sack out in some lounge in the res and sleep for the night.
I wake up Saturday morning hung over like a dog, and head home. I shower, change, etc and then come back at 5 pm for the closing ceremonies. They weren't very exciting but they ended at about 6:30, which gave me some time to go eat. I drove to McDonalds and was in line when I got a call on my phone from Pascale, asking me if I wanted to hang out that night. Of course, I said yes, so I picked her up at 7 and took her on a grand tour of the city for a few hours. At the end, I dropped her off, kissed her goodnight again (even though it really wasn't a date), and went home. Frosh week was over.
Sunday I did nothing outside the house. I basically just did some Biology homework all day and watched football.
Monday (yesterday) I went in for class, Ancient History and Medieval History. After I got home I went on to MSN and found that Pascale was online. So I got up my nerve and asked her to a movie, to which she gracefully accepted and we decided to go Tuesday night.
Tuesday (which was today) I went to my classes, but what I was most looking forward to was tonight. My last class ended at 4:00 so I jumped the earliest bus I could get and zipped home by 5 to shower up and get changed and get the car. I drove back to Dal and picked up Pascale at Shirreff at about 6:15, then took her to go see Cellular tonight. About 2/3rds through I steeled my nerve and made the move for a (sober) hand hold. It worked magnificently. Afterwards, I drove her home. It was a really awkward goodbye, like neither of us wanted to leave at all, but we really did have to, since she has to read the Sumerian Creation Epic tonight for tomorrow morning. So I finally said goodbye for sure and got another kiss before I left. I was absolutely elated. From there I walked to the Grawood (the campus pub in the SUB) and watched the 2nd period of the hockey game (Canada vs Finland, World Cup final) before booking it home for the start of the third. Then Canada won, which made my night even better than it already was (if that's possible). I've been typing this off and on for the past two hours now since the game ended and I've still got an enormous smile on my face.
Best week of my life, and one I'll never forget.
(told you it was long)
