Saw AC/DC this year. Of the original band only Angus is still there. Brian's voice was poor and he appeared out of shape. Over half of the concert was stuff prior to 1980. They played 2 songs from their most recent album, which by then was 2 years old.
The concert was one of my favourite shows I...
I've never heard a version of Mercy that I reckoned was in the top 75% of what U2 has done.
I doubt this will be the one to change that.
It's something they might have been able to pull off on sheer energy and Eno induced inspiration in the 80s, now it has neither.
In my opinion.
Sure, you can throw everything together in a big melting pot fed by your social media algorithms and let that decide how you feel about a work of art or enjoy a game of football.
Whether that says more about the artist / sports team or about yourself is also something you can discuss in a post...
While it would make sense to capitalize on the success of Sphere to release an album in 2024, as this is U2, the fact that they did the Sphere shows until beginning of March and uncertainties around Larry's recovery, makes it more likely they will release an album in 2025 and then tour second...
Might just be a Dutch thing then or how I am listening to music.
Even now, with the reunion getting a fair bit of coverage, I have only heard Wonderwall.
It was definitely a moment in time where British media managed to create a Britpop frenzie around Oasis and Blur that set the UK alight.
Living within the EU instead of in the UK, I can't remember hearing any Oasis song besides Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova (incredibly rarely) (and Song II...
Since his vocal peak was somewhere late 80s, I feel it's safe to say his very best days as a singer are behind him.
We should just be happy he sounds better than he did late 90s.
That must have been a rough decade.
Of course doing Sphere was for a big part about U2 being the first to do so.
But it's hard not to view the Sphere run as the 4 of them getting some sort of feel if U2 would still work as a live band without Larry.
Interesting to see Joanna Newsom in that line up.
Really hope she'll be releasing something new in the not too distant future.
(Guided by Voices, Dinosaur Jr and Belle & Sebastian on one bill is also pretty great.)
I agree with all of this, except for Discotheque, which I think really works. And you left out "If God ... " which works for me, since the less that is said about that the better.,
A lot of the songs on POP seem to want to be two or three things at the same time. Which always result in not...
I like nothing better than flogging the old POP horse.
For me it is at the bottom of their catalogue together with SOE.
It's riddled with missed opportunities.
The concept is good, but they already covered it all during ZOO TV and on Zooropa.
Lyrically it has some of Bono's strongest and most...
Personally, I think it's a pretty great song and I find it intriguing it's the second track of the album. Sounds more like a tour de force you expect about 3/4 through an album.
Boy up and until Rattle & Hum is all driven by inspiration and energy.
Everything after, except maybe Zooropa and that would also have been a dead end to pursue further rather quickly, is still at times inspired but also pretty labored.
It's no coincidence 3 Achtung songs were built out of the...
