3 Irishmen and a Dutchman Walk Into A Sphere - General Discussion Thread Part III

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I started out indifferent, didn’t go to any shows, kind of wish I had been to one, but had other shows and fun vacations planned. Still indifferent. I don’t know. I’m just not into the band anymore, I guess. But if they come to Chicago, I’ll go see them one last time.

as we come to an end of the Sphere residency - i can't help but think back to the handful of members who were adamant that this was going to be a disaster - whether that was because of no Larry, or that Vegas was a joke for morally corrupt bootlicking rubes and the band would be seen as old and out of touch for doing this, or that the venue was going to be a disaster and never work.

it would be great to get a few opinions from that group now that we're done and the shows have been, by most accepted measurable standards, a huge success.

i know at least one such person did end up going after all... but it would be interesting to hear some perspectives now and see if they've changed their tune, and/or are ready to keep fuckin' that chicken to death.
Yeah. It was funny seeing Laz's initial reactions and then how quickly he rolled them back, haha.

I think it speaks volumes that I flew halfway across the world for this and had absolutely negative interest in doing the same for ie/ei.

In my 20 years of hyper fandom of this band, they've had exactly three times where it's felt like there's a broad positive sentiment surrounding the band: 2004-2006 (Vertigo, Hutdab, the Vertigo Tour), 2017 (JT30) and 2023 (Sphere).

But they don't learn, and are stubborn, and as I've been saying for fucking years now, their fucked obsession with being the biggest and most-loved band on earth leads them to make really shit music, whether it's new (SOI/E) or old (SOS). And if they just took a fucking breath and embraced the reality of being their age, dropped the obsession and just made good music - and we've seen a number of examples of it in recent years (Landlady, Troubles, Cedars, No Line, 40 Foot Man, others) - they would actually get exactly what they want: positive sentiment, because they're just making music without trying to make chart hits, and they're touring their best music.

They were too busy playing all the fucking shit songs from those two albums. Absolutely criminal.
U2 have always been bad judges of their own material.
SoE is pretty slim pickings though. I loved SoI (and still do!), but the Experience record was a dud apart from a couple of tracks imo. The most exciting thing about a new U2 album will be not having SoE as their most recent new material.

I’m inside this bitch. And they are playing u2 music. And I just keep complaining about this bad music to annoy others. Im GA line material. But I’m in sec 102 underhang city. And I don’t give a crap. But Dolan DNA all over this place. Just like in all those sex charges against him. Ok high on Xanax. Also would say this anyway. Excited !!!

On the flip side, you still got all those songs to listen to at the end of the day anyway… aside from Cedars, which isn’t really an actual “song” in the sense of the word, but that’s just me.

I guess the end, I’ll either like the songs or I won’t. If they released a completely different album than whatever one is being discussed, it’s going to be the same discussion about those songs anyway. Some people like them, some loved them, some disliked a few and liked a few others, and so forth. The fact is they’re a big band and always wanted to be one. And always had songs with vi–IV–I–V chords, which is half of what you hear on the radio anyway (if that’s bad, then we can’t listen to Streets, WOWY, The Fly, UTEOTW, Ultra Violet, or The Wanderer anymore - among other pre-2000 tracks, which is supposedly when they started “caring” about this all of a sudden, after two decades or so).

All these pictures were nice to see. My friend who is there also sent me pictures of the Trabby at Zoo Station. All 4 of them signed it, with Bram making a very cute drum kit. The lowlight was seeing Bono writing "6 oclock in the morning your the last to hear the warning"

Thankfully there is room for him to add an apostrophe and the missing e, but someone needs to drag him back there. :p
So much for those English lessons at Mount Temple, eh?

How weird must it be to watch your band perform from a luxury suite

Amazing show. I stood for like the first 7 songs, then someone told me to sit. IN general I seemed to be the only person who stayed in my seat the entire concert -- why do people pay so much money and miss half the show getting drinks. I mean if it was a shitty band... so the crowd is a weird mix of people that have seen them 10 times in the sphere and people with 10 seconds of attention span.

I was in the underhang. And I loved it. Section at least. I think only seeing 1/2 the screen made me just enjoy the music / sound more.

Anyway -- 1/2 a xanax and great sound -- vegas -- walking to and from the show like I used to when I lived in NYC for MSG.

I checked out all the levels -- the people who worked there were way too nice -- exact opposite for MSG NYC employees...

I can't think straight, but I'm supposed to go back in the lovely 400 section... which I checked out and even for me didn't seem too bad... I don't think I could make it al the way to the top rows...

Lardence has a boot cast on his left leg so, outside of a tambourine cameo on Elevation or something, chances of a guest performance on the last show are very slim.

Also claimed they were filming tonight and that would be what people saw. But I assume they say that many nights. I've spoiled many things for myself, but didn't know there was a speech before BD...

I think they were filming it, from what I could see in sec. 110. The same handheld camera type (with two grips) used to film Atomic City was used for the show.

There were definitely people that flew all the way there to see Larry… wave.
