New Album Discussion 1 - Songs of..... - Unreasonable guitar album

Does Atomic City seem reminiscent of The Miracle of Joey Ramone to anyone else? Especially the chorus. It feels far more spontaneous and unpolished though, which is nice.

    A Sort of Homecoming w David Letterman - Disney+

I liked the part where the last lines of Sunday Bloody Sunday were crossed out and replaced with "religion is the enemy of the holy spirit guide" or whatever that shit was.

Songs of Surrender - Discussion, reviews, impressions

My long review: TL;DR: “Stories for Boys,” “Desire, “Stay” and “Dirty Day” are great. “Two Hearts Beat as One” and “Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own” are very good. Many others are good, and just as many don't land, but overall the album is better than I expected, and it's a generous...

New Album Discussion 10 - Songs of Sir, this is a Wendy's, durr

Dirty Day sounding good! Kinda off topic, but I don't really find myself excited about a rawk album from U2. They have spent plenty of time chasing that sound in the new millenium, often to subpar results. I would be way more interested in more stuff like the Andy Barlow-produced tracks from...

New Album Discussion 10 - Songs of Sir, this is a Wendy's, durr

BD is the best one so far. I think because the verses are always sung in a sort of talky lower register, it's not much of a change for Bono's "new" vocal approach. Music sounds great, too. Of course, there are a few weird phrasings from Bono and some questionable lyric rewrites, but oh well.

Songs that would fit better on SOI vs. SOE?

I checked to see if there was already a thread on this, couldn't see one. Are there any songs you think should have been on SOI that were featured on SOE, or vice versa? As we know, a lot of these songs were developed / written around the same time. Which ones don't quite fit the concept of...

New Album Discussion 10 - Songs of Sir, this is a Wendy's, durr

I think the vocal approach on these versions isn't helping. As a singer Bono's known for his strength mostly, so trying to do these undersung, conversational takes is just reading as weak, tired, old, etc. when in reality he still has plenty of strength. Trying to sell this as the "singer Bono...

New Album Discussion 10 - Songs of Sir, this is a Wendy's, durr

One preview sounds decent. In terms of a reimagining, they already did that very successfully with the "Pavarotti and Friends" Bosnia concert version. It's on Spotify (it wasn't before). I don't mind having both versions, though. That's Edge singing lead vocal on the snippet of Two Hearts Beat...

New Album Discussion 9 - Larry needs new arms, ba rum pa pum pum

I'm not all that bothered about the project. I expect there will be two or three tracks that I love and put on repeat. Maybe even ten I can sort into a coherent "album." I like the originals too much to get into this, I think. Hopefully the band doesn't expect to get a hit from releasing a...

New Album Discussion 9 - Larry needs new arms, ba rum pa pum pum

Also, I'm sure it's been pointed out already, but why is every photo on the cover from the Pop album cover photo shoot except for Bono's? Lol

New Album Discussion 9 - Larry needs new arms, ba rum pa pum pum

It sounds like Bono forgot how to sing the song lol. Of course he didn't, he's been singing it for 30 plus years, but the attempts to add variation into the melody of a song that is burned into my brain don't work. I just want him to sing it. It's not fun hearing him skirt around and subvert the...

Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way appreciation thread

I really dislike Bono's wailing in the chorus of this song. Sounds like he stepped on a Lego piece.

Rating songs SOE - 2.5 months after release

According to iTunes, my top 5 played tracks from SOE are: 1. Book of Your Heart 2. Love is All We Have Left 3. The Little Things That Give You Away 4. You're the Best Thing About Me 5. Landlady Sounds about right, except I would rank Lights of Home as 4th best on the album. As for worst... I...

Bono said in the Howard Stern interview that the song was a "letter" addressed to one of his daughters, who is an activist.

    Vulture ranks 218 U2 songs

When you rank so many songs, some of the positions can't help but feel arbitrary. I always enjoy reading these things, though, and the writer is clearly a fan. Of course, I can (and will) quibble with some of the rankings. ;) Love Comes Tumbling at #200? For shame. Red Light better than The...

The Little Things That Give You Away - Appreciation Thread

Bono's voice sounds a bit thin and tired. Still nice to hear this though. Hope this means they plan on releasing the album version as a single and promoting it.

Get Out of Your Own Way

Normally I would be happy to just ignore a song I don’t like. But this is what they’re using to promote the album… I think it's the worst song on the album. Get Out must be the most toothless political song the band has ever released. I know, it doesn’t directly address a specific political...

    Lights of Home

Nope. Yeah, it doesn't. But there's more to sequencing an album than making sure every song is sonically similar to the songs that come before and after it. And I like that the transition is jarring, which I alluded to previously. Anyway, have fun with your alternate track list, no one's...

    Lights of Home

Agreed. I don't think there's anything wrong with the transition between Love is All We Have Left and Lights. It might sound a bit jarring, but maybe that's the point.
