No Line On The Horizon: the most underrated album?

So I listened to NLOTH on my way into work (I have a long commute) and nothing has changed for me... it starts well, it ends well but those middle 3 tracks  Makes me wonder what NLOTH could have been like as a 6 or 7 track EP... though who know's what the band would have cut! My...

No Line On The Horizon: the most underrated album?

I agree with the sentiment above. Though I have no problem with a bit of bombast and grandiosity as long as it's not book-ended by crap/wtf moments. Every U2 album has it's moments of bombast & grandiosity, it just feels to me like the other tracks play an outsized role in framing how we may...

No Line On The Horizon: the most underrated album?

Haven't posted in ages but thought I'd chime in and say that I enjoy the last 4 albums a ton. Though I haven't listened to an individual album front to back in ages. My biggest gripe with U2 since the 90's has been the odd one or two really bad moments on each of the last four albums that have...

SOE 14: The Morning after Meltdown

This!!! Just write some great songs, draw on recent life experiences... Play the hits to pay the bills but sprinkle in some new material from time to time and all is good. Nobody wants them to turn into the stones but their ambition to remain "relevant" is such an anchor these days. There must...

SOE 14: The Morning after Meltdown

I posted this in the last thread before realizing this one was opened.... I seldom post here but I've lurked often in the past 15 years. Don't want to be a downer, but as a one time massive fan who has defended the band in countless arguments I feel last night's performance helped me realize...

SOE Lucky 13: Dallas Lies in Vegas ...TONIGHT!

I seldom post here but I've lurked often in the past 15 years. Don't want to be a downer, but as a one time massive fan who has defended the band in countless arguments I feel last night's performance helped me realize that the detractors were often right. Or at the very least, this band has...

Songs of Experience - Part 3

 Too soon? :applaud: Nope, that was funny and purely because it feels like Bono would do just about anything to be "relevant" (the infamous short lived "guy-liner on a middle aged man look" is the best example I can think of at the moment).

    Best show since ZooTV

I agree with the points above, but having seen the show in Toronto last night from the nosebleeds I have to say that I was floored by how great the stage design is on this tour. If they kept the layout and tech for all future tours (with updates to the video content of course) I would not...

July 7th, 2015 - Toronto, ON, Air Canada Centre

I'm a long time lurker and infrequent poster but thought I'd chime in on the show last night. First off, what was most special for me was that I took my 8.5 year old son to his first real concert. Aside from a few loud whispers of "you've got to be kidding me" and "who brings a kid to a concert"...

All critical, "professional" reviews of SOI here, Pt. 2

I think you are being a bit generous to the reviewer here. To me "eyes as red as Christmas" and "someone else's suicide" should be hints at something sinister beneath the surface and a good reviewer would make the effort to peel a layer or two off the onion. Heck, there are enough reviews out...

    Rank the Album Among Others

I agree with all of this. But for me I'm not yet sure if this bodes favorably or unfavorably for where this album will sit long term. I've seen SOI as falling in the lower/middle of the pack to as high as 3rd in the U2 catalogue at times. Glass half full: consistency = no clunkers Glass half...

    SOI Misheard Lyrics

This one is also from California... "Well, that's what took me where I need to be Which is here, out on Zuma Watching you cry like a baby" That middle line sounded like "which is here, Aloezuma" to me.... my google searches for "Aloezuma":reject: yielded no results...

Sleep Like A Baby Tonight - Song Discussion

St. Francis is one of the most revered Saints and generally considered the one that most embodied compassion for the underprivileged, weak, and the sick. I think this line is about highlighting how hypocritical the antagonist is... His evil actions are driving his victims to suicide yet he is...

Sleep Like A Baby Tonight - Song Discussion

There is something about the "eyes as red as Christmas" line and the way its delivered that has me thinking its more likely #2 and that its a metaphor for the subject being truly evil rather than just having bloodshot eyes. That's not to say that I think Bono is saying the "enablers" are any...

    Rank the Album Among Others

    1) AB 2) Z 3) JT 4) TUF 5) SOI 6) WAR 7) NLOTH 8) ATYCLB 9) POP 10) R&H 11) Boy 12) HTDAAB 13) October This list reflects where I think SOI will end up for me in the near term until I get to see the songs live. Its been as high as 3rd best behind AB & JT as of a few days ago but I've gone on...

California (There Is No End To Love) - Song Discussion

I'd say there is a difference between an "ordinary" 12 year old girl and the daughter of an interferencer though. My kids hear more U2, Depeche Mode, Arcade Fire, Killers, Coldplay :reject:, Roxy Music, Bowie etc. around our house than Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and 1D. so they do appreciate...

California (There Is No End To Love) - Song Discussion

Blasphemy is right! The Troubles is a stellar closer. But I do see what you are saying about California, perhaps it there could be a reprise "version" at the end of SOE or SOA I suppose. :hmm:

California (There Is No End To Love) - Song Discussion

A Pixar video is an awesome idea! Though when I first heard the song I imagined it as being kind of an upbeat prequel to Don Henley's "boys of summer" :reject:

California (There Is No End To Love) - Song Discussion

My almost 8 year old son is loving the album but RBW is his favorite. My almost 6 year old daughter is kind of "meh" on the whole thing but she seems to like California (probably due to a connection with Katy Perry) Anyhow, its a great driving tune and one that seems to just fit on this album.

Every Breaking Wave - Song Discussion

I can see the similarity in this context, but its a stretch to even bring this up since WOWY was released over 27 years ago! Cedarwood is way similar to SUC than EBW is to WOWY, and the fat bass on IRIS reminds me of early U2.

Album cover - Fanning - SoE

My first post in this thread.... I did find the image "odd" at first because its so different from the imagery we are accustomed to seeing from U2 (at least since AB anyway). Two shirtless men in an embrace of sorts (young/old, gay/straight, related/not, whatever!) is not what I would have...

Songs of Innocence - Album Discussion Pt.2

IMO the mix is awful with revealing components. It actually sounds better to me on crap headphones vs my better stuff. The album is unlistenable on my ultimate ears IEMs. Looking forward to the physical releases!
